• BMW 1 Series
  It's easy to be cynical about the 1 Series until you drive it. Then you start devising ways to get your hands on one at the least possible expense.

• Renault Megane
  Not many people know this, but the Renault Megane is an amazing vehicle. The standard five-door hatch has spawned so many variants it's hard to keep track.
• Volkswagen Golf
  The definitive sporty hatchback for all the VW Golf never fails to impress.
• BMW 3 Series
  BMW got back to basics with the E90 generation 3 Series. This was the car that shucked off the gimmicky styling and did what BMWs have always done best - concentrated on the engineering.
