• BMW 1 Series
  It's easy to be cynical about the 1 Series until you drive it. Then you start devising ways to get your hands on one at the least possible expense.

  Nobody quite saw the Mazda6 coming. It's predecessor, the 626 series, was inoffensive, utterly reliable and massively bland. The Mazda6 on the other hand was a revelation.
• Renault Megane
  Not many people know this, but the Renault Megane is an amazing vehicle. The standard five-door hatch has spawned so many variants it's hard to keep track.
• Volkswagen Golf
  The definitive sporty hatchback for all the VW Golf never fails to impress.
• BMW 3 Series
  BMW got back to basics with the E90 generation 3 Series. This was the car that shucked off the gimmicky styling and did what BMWs have always done best - concentrated on the engineering.
